How this course will be helpful to my professional practice
After taking this course, I feel more prepared than ever to tackle my first classroom in September. I felt very anxious before this course, thinking of all the possible exceptionalities that could be in my class. I didn't have any idea where to begin if I found out that I had an exceptional student in my classroom (let alone multiple exceptionalities!). I have learned of several strategies and resources to use in my classroom. Furthermore, the two course textbooks will be kept in my classroom for future reference. They both provide invaluable information that I can refer to at any point.
Professional growth
In taking this course, I have grown as a professional in the teaching field. In collaboration with my colleagues from this course, I have learned many different resources that are available for me. Discussion with others opened my eyes to new ideas that I hadn't thought of myself. I feel much more prepared stepping into my classroom in a few short weeks! One of the the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession outlined by the The Ontario College of Teachers is Commitment to Students and Student Learning. I believe that in taking this course, I have demonstrated my commitment to my future students. In furthering my knowledge and learning as much as I can about various exceptionalities, I prove my commitment to learning.
Developing further knowledge and skills in the field of Special Education
Since I recently graduated from university and I will have my first classroom in September, I think one way I can further my knowledge in this field would be to have students with exceptionalities in my class. Working with an IEP firsthand and speaking with exceptional students will put my learning from this course into action. I can also see myself taking the second part of this additional qualification in the future. I have always imagined myself becoming a Special Education teacher later in my career. As I mentioned previously, I have a desire to learn and I will continue educating myself through courses and workshops throughout my teaching career.
